ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most challenging health problems in the 21st century that involved people of all ages and races. Whilst the evaluation of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in diabetic patients has been growing over the world, the topic has not being well discovered in Vietnam.

Objectives

The study aimed to describe the HRQoL in diabetic people at two health care settings in Hanoi in 2014 and to explore some factors associated to the HRQoL in those patients.

Methods

A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted using the Vietnamese version of Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) on 134 diabetic patients at two health care settings in Hanoi: the National Institute of Diabetes and Metabolic disorders (NIDIMED) and Hanoi Medical University Hospital (HMUH) from 9/2014 to 11/2014.

Results

The mean age of the participants was 62.5±12.2 years, 46.3% were male and 53.7% were female. The mean HRQoL score was 61.2±17.3, higher in mental components (68.8±17.4) and lower in physical components (57.7±22.5). Being female, older in age, widowed, lower educational level, unemployed, hospitalized and worse financial status were significantly associated to lowering HRQoL scores. Insulin therapy, co-morbidities, level of disease-related knowledge and regular exercise program also reported significant relationship with HRQoL.

Conclusions

The study findings indicated that patients with diabetes in NIDIMED and HMUH suffered from relatively fair HRQoL. Therefore much more attention should be paid on those patients’ HRQoL to identify and implement appropriate solutions for achieving better management of diabetes and ultimately improving the quality of life of diabetic patients.
