Effects of role adaptation promotion program for caregivers of asthmatic children: an application of the roy adaptation model

 ABSTRACT

With an increasing amount of asthmatic children, Global Initiative for Asthma Guidelines has been recognized as a means to improve a child’s symptoms and caregiver was found as an important factor in controlling the disease. However, a number of studies was not focusing on their practices according to Global Initiative for Asthma Guidelines. As a result, many asthmatic children have an uncontrolled condition.

Objectives

This experimental study aimed to investigate an effect of role adaptation promotion program for caregivers of asthmatic children using Roy adaptation model as a framework.

Methods

The participants included caregivers and asthmatic children aged between 2-6 years old. Of 26 persons in experimental group and 24 persons in comparison group were recruited by simple random sampling. The intervention included providing information about early symptoms, signs of asthma and provide practicing using a Metered Dose Inhaler. Data was collected by self-administered questionnaires for adaptation of role function and social support at the beginning of the study, 5th week and the 7th week. Statistical analysis was performed by using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, Independent t-test, Repeated measure ANOVA and Bonferroni.

Results

Results showed that the caregivers in the experimental group had higher scores in the role adaptation for taking care of asthmatic children, social support and using of MDI in the 5th and 7th week than those at the beginning and when compared to the comparison group (p<0.05).

Conclusion

The implementation of the program should be promoted in order to improve an adaptation of caregivers of children with asthma. Skill in using MDI should be practiced among caregivers and children with asthma periodically.
