 ABSTRACT

Up to the present, smoking among Thai people has been increasing rapidly. This behavior affects the health of the consumers in both the short and long term. The investigation of various factors affecting smoking would be helpful in order to suggest the appropriate interventions which aim to prevent students from smoking.

Objectives

The purposes of this correlational research are to predict the intention of smoking behavior among university students in Bangkok.

Methods

By applying systematic random sampling, 346 students from the Science Center were selected. The questionnaire was developed by a researcher. Content validity was then approved by three what content validity index was accounted to be 0.95, and the reliabilities of the four subparts of a questionnaire were 0.85, 0.90, 0.94, and 0.92 respectively.

Results

The results revealed that the mean age was 20.07 years (SD = 1.267), and showed a significant relationship among all the variables. Attitude toward smoking, subjective norm and perceive behavior control are correlated with intention to smoking behavior )r = 0.348, 0.345, 0.376). Furthermore, 27.8 of samples who showed their intention of smoking could be explained by personal factors, attitude toward smoking, subjective norm, and perceived control behavior at   p < 0.05 )R2 = 0.278, p < 0.05).

Conclusion

Results of this study yield several implications and recommendations that, accessibility of cigarette should be controlled through some obligations such as cigarette not being not allowed to be sold to adolescents both within and close to university, promoting smoking campaigns should be prohibited while no-smoking zones should also be established within the campus.
