Job satisfaction of registered nurses working at governmental geriatric clinics in Thailand

 Abstract

Nursing is the health profession needed at geriatric clinics in all general hospitals. This comes in response to clinics being specified in the Thai 2nd National Plan for the Elderly (2002-2021 B.E.).

Objectives

To examine job satisfaction of registered nurses working in geriatric clinics at governmental general, regional, and tertiary hospitals, Ministry of Public Health, Thailand.

Methods

One hundred and fourteen nurses were asked to complete the mailed self-administered questionnaires with a response rate of 67.5%. The questionnaire included demographic characteristics and the job satisfaction questionnaire was modified from Herzberg’s motivation-hygiene theory. Descriptive statistics and chi-square test were employed for data analyses.

Results

Job satisfaction, motivating factors and hygiene factors were mostly at the high level among nurses working at geriatric clinics. There was an association between work experience in geriatric clinics and the overall score of job satisfaction (p = 0.030). In addition, the level of the hospital had a significant relationship with the motivating factors (p = 0.022). Number of staff in geriatric clinics also had a significant relationship with the motivating factors, hygiene factors and the overall score of job satisfaction (p < 0.05).

Conclusion

This evidence reveals that advanced nursing practice in geriatric care and number of routine staff reflects nurses’ job satisfaction. Recommendations are proposed on providing geriatric nursing care training programs for registered nurses working in geriatric clinics as well as manpower administration to promote quality of geriatric care and job satisfaction.
