Job strain among Thai male nurses working in hospital settings

 ABSTRACT

Working conditions and gender differences may increase the potential for job strain among male nurses.

Objectives

To examine job strain among male nurses in Thailand and the associated related factors.

Methods

This is a cross-sectional study. Subjects were 329 male nurses working in hospital settings drawn by snowball sampling. Job strain was measured using the Thai version of Job Content Questionnaire. The data were collected by mail with a response rate of 82.8 %.

Results

It was revealed that 31.9 percent of the male nurses had a high level of job strain. Logistic regression analysis indicated that age (OR = 2.17, 95% CI: 1.22 - 4.23), low monthly income (OR = 2.12, 95%CI: 1.36 - 4.23), work unit (OR = 1.94, 95%CI: 1.32 - 3.81), social support from supervisors (OR = 2.48, 95%CI: 1.44 - 3.57) and role ambiguity (OR = 2.38, 95%CI: 1.43 - 3.86) were significantly related to job strain among male nurses.

Conclusion

Findings suggest that nursing administrators should develop and apply appropriate policies and strategies to reduce job strain among male nurses; especially among those from a younger age group and lower monthly income. An appropriate working schedule should be arranged for those working in the emergency unit. Male nurses ought also be prepared for coping with job strain and acquire job stress management skills. Role clarification and social support from supervisors should also be enhanced to prevent job strain in male nurses.
