ABSTRACT

Preterm birth and low birth weight are the leading causes of neonatal, infant, and neurodevelopment, childhood morbidity, mortality as well as disabilities worldwide. There are a number of well-known risk factors such as preeclampsia, hypertension, gestational diabetes, substance abuse, nutritional intake, smoke and recently known intimate partner violence.

Objectives

To measure the incidence and risk factors ofpreterm birth in Vietnam, 2014-2015.

Methods

This was a cohort study, 1285 pregnant women in all 24 communes in Dong Anh district were recruited for following up the preterm birth. Preterm babies is defined as babies were born before 37 weeks of gestation. Antenatal depression was measured by Edinburgh antenatal depression scale. EPDS score is ranging from 0 to 30. The cut off points of EPDS was 9/10 scores. The association between risk factors of preterm was analyzed by cross tabulation (unadjusted), stratified and multivariate analysis (adjusted).

Results

Incidence of preterm birth in Dong Anh district was still a public health problem (5.6%). Women with antenatal depression still had preterm birth children 3 times more than the others (95% CI: 1.38-6.58). Similarly, farmers still had preterm birth children 1.9 times more than the others (95%: 1.03-3.51).Women with emotional violence had preterm birth children 2.1times more than the others (95% CI: 1.38-6.58).

Conclusion

Preterm is still major public health problem in Vietnam. Antenatal depression, violence during pregnancy and occupation are predictors of preterm birth. Screening the antenatal depression, partner emotional violence and their interventions may help improve birth outcomes.
