 ABSTRACT

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common disease in the world as well as in Vietnam. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a locoregional therapy to destroy tumor tissue by heat.

Objectives

This study was conducted to evaluate the treatment response in patients with HCC treated by echo-guided RFA with Soloist/ LeVeen needles; and to assess the advantages, disadvantages and applicable capacity of the procedure in clinics.

Methods

Interventional study on 85 HCC patients with the number of lesions ≤3 for tumor size ≤3 cm or a single tumor with the size ≤7 cm. The patients were divided into 2 groups: the first group was treated only by percutaneous RFA guided by ultrasound and the second was treated by percutaneous RFA combined with Transcatheter oily Chemoembolization (TACE). The Soloist and LeVeen needles were chosen suitably to tumor sizes.

Results

Percutaneous RFA was a safe procedure with the side effect rate - 1.79 %. The common side effects were fever and abdominal pain within 1 - 3 days. In total 85 patients, 41 patients had better clinical response with gain weight and less painful accounting for 48.3%; 27 patients had unchanged conditions - 31.7% and 17 patients had worse progression during following up time.

Conclusion

Echo-guided percutaneous RFA with Soloist and LeVeen needle is a safe and effective technique to improve the quality of life for HCC patients.
